That's the Synthetic AI era.

It's not just AI writing posts. It's AI generating "proof" at scale: product screens, charts, customer quotes, benchmarks, before-and-after visuals. Content that looks real enough to pass at scroll speed, even when the underlying evidence is thin or missing.

And that changes the risk profile of marketing.

Because now a single asset can trigger a credibility test in public. Not because your intent was bad, but because you cannot answer the simplest question fast: "Where did this come from?"

One synthetic screenshot. One AI-suggested stat with no source. One confident claim you can't defend.

And your growth engine turns into a trust audit.

Context

Here's the pattern I keep seeing (composite, but painfully familiar).

A marketing lead ships a campaign. Great creative. Clean copy. Strong proof. Leadership loves it. "More like this. Faster." Then the comments turn.

A customer asks where the number came from. A competitor reposts it with a counter-screenshot. Someone tags Legal. Someone tags the CEO. Now it is not a positioning debate. It is a truth debate. And truth debates have a brutal dynamic: you either produce receipts fast, or you lose time, trust, and control.

So leadership does the predictable thing. They add approvals. Everything goes into one queue. Low-risk posts get blocked behind high-risk claims. Speed drops. People get frustrated. And teams quietly route around the process.

This is how "governance" becomes theater.

Core insights

Insight 1: Risk is not evenly distributed across content

A brand story post is not the same as a quantified performance claim. A product explainer is not the same as an AI-generated testimonial visual. Treating them the same is what creates both outcomes nobody wants:

  • Move fast and step on a landmine
  • Move slow and call it responsibility

This is why risk routing matters more than approvals.

Insight 2: Synthetic AI changes the burden of proof

In the pre-AI era, most teams shipped "good enough" with social proof and a few links. In the synthetic era, your audience assumes:

Practical tool / framework: Two Lanes, One Log

The concept

Split your content into two lanes:

Fast Lane — Low-risk content: brand stories, culture posts, event recaps, commentary, opinion pieces. These ship on a lightweight review cycle. No committee. No multi-day queue.

Controlled Lane — High-risk content: quantified claims, performance benchmarks, AI-generated visuals, customer quotes, before-and-after comparisons, anything that could trigger a "prove it" response. These require evidence packs before publish.

One Log tracks everything. Both lanes. Every asset. Every decision.

The routing rubric (simple enough to remember)

Does the asset contain a quantified claim, a customer reference, a performance benchmark, or synthetic media? If yes → Controlled Lane. If no → Fast Lane.

The evidence ladder (what "verification" actually means)

  • Level 1 — Internal reference only (team knowledge, no external source)
  • Level 2 — Internal data with a named source (dashboard, report, owner)
  • Level 3 — External third-party source (linked, dated, verifiable)
  • Level 4 — Primary evidence (original research, signed customer approval, raw data)

Controlled Lane assets require Level 3 or 4 evidence.

The Log (minimum viable fields)

  • Asset name
  • Lane (Fast / Controlled)
  • Evidence level (1–4)
  • Source links
  • Named owner (one person)
  • Reviewer (one person, not a committee)
  • Decision rationale (2–3 sentences)
  • Publish surfaces (LinkedIn, landing page, ads, email)
  • Expiry date (when the claim must be revalidated)

This is how you get speed and accountability.

Metrics and KPIs that matter

If you cannot measure it, you will overcorrect.

Here are the numbers I would put on a leadership dashboard:

  • Fast Lane Throughput — Assets shipped per week that never enter Controlled Lane.
  • Controlled Lane Cycle Time — Median time from draft-ready to publish for high-risk assets.
  • Evidence Coverage Rate — % of Controlled Lane assets with Level 3 or 4 evidence packs.
  • Challenge Rate — Public "source?" comments per 100 posts that include claims.
  • Correction Velocity — Time from challenge to a defensible response (with receipts).
  • Trust Incident Rate — Rate of public corrections, retractions, or takedowns caused by inaccurate claims, misleading proof, or synthetic media confusion (per 100 assets shipped).
  • Synthetic Disclosure Compliance — % of synthetic visuals correctly labeled where required or expected.

This turns "be careful" into operational control.

Q&A (the questions I'm seeing most right now)

Q1: Do we need to disclose when content is AI-generated? If the content could be interpreted as authentic media, assume disclosure expectations are increasing. EU transparency work around deepfakes is pushing toward clear labeling and consistent icons. Even where it is not legally required, disclosure can be a trust strategy. People are not mad that you used AI. They are mad when you used AI to imply reality.

Q2: What's the fastest way to stop hallucinated stats from shipping? Ban unsourced numbers. Period. And make "evidence level" a required field in the log. Also remember regulators are watching. The FTC has signaled enforcement around deceptive AI-related claims and the broader standard remains truthfulness and substantiation. Q3: Are AI ads and synthetic creatives actually hurting brands, or is this overblown? The backlash is real, and it is documented. There have been multiple high-profile AI ad controversies and public reactions tied to authenticity, ethics, and aesthetics. Q4: Who owns this, Marketing or Legal? Marketing owns speed. Legal owns risk guidance. But one person must own each high-risk ship. That is why the log matters. It forces a named owner and a recorded rationale. It also creates the dataset you use to tighten your rubric over time, which is how management systems like ISO/IEC 42001 think about continuous improvement.

Q5: Won't this slow us down? If everything goes through review, yes. If only the right things do, no. Work is already accelerating. Microsoft's Work Trend Index describes a world where "digital labor" increases capacity beyond headcount. That pushes leaders to ship more. Two Lanes protects the speed work while making high-risk work defensible.
