Dear Founders: Growth Isn't Just About Running More Ads

By Logan SivanasenJul 15, 20255 min read

When it's time to grow, the default answer is often 'Let's run more ads'. But real, sustainable growth rarely begins in an ad dashboard.

Let's have an honest conversation.

I've worked with startups at every stage-from those just finding their footing to others sprinting toward scale. And time and again, one thing stands out: When it's time to grow, the default answer is often, "Let's run more ads".

And while performance media certainly has its place, relying on it as the only lever can be a costly mistake.

Because real, sustainable growth rarely begins in an ad dashboard.

The Problem with Paid-First Thinking

Paid campaigns can give you a quick lift-but they also often create a false sense of momentum.

I've seen teams obsess over CPMs, CTRs, and impressions… without being clear on who they're reaching, why it matters, or what happens next.

Sometimes, they've barely validated product-market fit.

Sometimes, they're solving for scale before solving for value.

And almost always, they're missing the real question: Are we building something that people actually want to stay for-or just to click on?

Growth That's Built In, Not Bolted On

Before you pour more money into ads, take a moment to check the foundations:

  • Are users finding value early?
  • Is your product solving a sharp enough pain?
  • Are existing customers telling others?
  • Are you tracking outcomes, not just outputs?

I've seen startups ignite traction not through bigger budgets, but by simplifying onboarding. By strengthening feedback loops. By empowering users or customers to share their success stories.

Because growth isn't just a campaign-it's actually an experience.

What Real Growth Looks Like

It's easy to forget that your best growth engine might already be inside your walls. Not in the ads, but in how marketing talks to product. In how sales shares frontline insight. In how support becomes your listening post.

Growth starts when key departments-marketing, product, sales, and support-are aligned. When insights flow freely and build on one another, that's when real, sustainable growth begins. It's not just about the sum of efforts; it's about how those efforts connect to create momentum.

That's where things actually begin to compound and start to matter exponentially.

A Few Things Worth Remembering

  • Don't rush paid campaigns until the basics work. Let strong signals guide you, then amplify them.
  • Map the whole journey, not just the funnel. Consider how customers engage post-purchase. How do they advocate for your product? You'll uncover more friction-and more opportunity.
  • Brand is not a luxury. It's what earns you trust when budgets tighten and competitors shout louder. Realize & dare to pivot.
  • Team culture matters. Growth that burns people out is never sustainable. Remember your biggest asset is always the team.
  • Measure what actually matters. Vanity metrics are loud. Value is quiet, but sticky. Analyze your historical data in the perspective of retention and not short-term noise.

Start Where You Are

If you're a founder figuring this all out-fret not, you're not alone. There's no single formula. It's about clarity, focus, and a deep willingness to listen to your customers and team.

Ask the hard questions. Track what moves the needle. Celebrate small wins. Build trust one interaction at a time.

You don't need a massive budget to grow. You just need a product or solution people care about and see value in, a team that believes in the mission, and the patience to build something that lasts.

Dear founders, if you're navigating these waters too, I'd love to hear what's working (or not) for you. Let's learn from each other.
